4.1 Introduction

This chapter describes a series of universities and other institutes that either offer international education or are active in (international) research in the field of the environment and development. In recent years the boundaries between education and research have become less strict. Educational institutes conduct research, while research institutes offer educational services. Another development is the twinning of research institutions with other sectors in society such as NGOs, private companies and financial institutions to obtain a broader perspective on certain issues and activities. Furthermore, university faculties and university research institutes are venturing into the realm of consultancies, which means that the difference between these institutes and (commercial) consultancies is becoming less distinct.
