3.5 Affiliates of Political Parties
At the beginning of 1990 the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) established a foundation to develop and maintain contact with Central and Eastern Europe. The foundation was named after Alfred Mozer, the first international secretary of the PvdA. The aim of the AMS is to support the development of democracy through the training and schooling of (social) democratic political parties.
Since the entry of eight Eastern European countries into the EU, the AMS has shifted its attention towards the non-EU members in Eastern Europe: The Russian Federation, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, the Caucasus region (Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia) and South-Eastern Europe (Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, FYROM, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, including Kosovo).
The foundation for international solidarity Eduardo Frei is related to the Dutch Christian Democratic Party (CDA) and was founded in 1990. The goals of the foundation are: 1) to promote Christian Democratic thinking and knowledge in the field of international cooperation in general, and in the field of development cooperation and human rights in particular; 2) to stimulate the conscious involvement of CDA members and affiliated organisations in the above fields; and 3) to initiate and support projects which are aimed at promoting Christian Democratic principles, especially in the South and in Central and Eastern Europe.
In Latin America the foundation supports the Chilean Eduardo Frei Foundation. In the Netherlands the Foundation organises workshops and conferences on environment and development cooperation.
The EVS is an independent organisation that is closely linked to the ideas of social democracy and the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA). The EVS believes that all the people in the South and the North have equal rights to be self-sufficient, to prevent poverty, to develop democracy and to preserve their natural resources and environment. On the basis of this vision it draws attention to international cooperation and sustainable poverty alleviation.
The Foundation aims to influence political decision-making at the local, national and European levels, in particular with respect to the agenda of the PvdA and its related parties and groups in Europe. By organising campaigns, debates and conferences, the EVS tries to interest as wide an audience as possible in issues such as sustainable poverty alleviation, conflict prevention, good governance, human rights, environmental protection and a fair trade policy.
The Foundation was founded in 1995 by members of the Dutch Green Party: ‘Groen Links’. Its aim is to generate more attention for international cooperation and sustainable development within Dutch politics. The SDS is involved in several projects and organises information activities for party members and the general public. At an international level it supports the establishment and development of political parties and networks.
