1.6.2 Environment
Since 1987 the Netherlands Commission for EIA has the legal status to act as an independent advisor on Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). The final objective of the work of the Commission is to promote the ecological and social sustainability of development co-operation and poverty reduction. To achieve this objective, the Commission aims at establishing effective impact assessment systems in developing countries.
The Council for Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM-raad) is the government's advisory board for policies regarding sustainability and the living environment. It is made up of experts from a wide range of disciplines. The council members have been selected for their ability to analyse policy from an integrated, long term and strategic perspective. The VROM-raad participates in a network of European environmental advisory bodies.
The National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) is a research institute for policy support, integrated with a planning agency for the environment and nature conservation. RIVM falls under the responsibility of the Ministry of VWS. The RIVM functions as a centre of expertise for the Ministry of VROM. Activities include research coupled with the management of the National Integrated Monitoring Network for Environmental Quality to monitor the quality of air, rainwater, soil, groundwater and drinking water. In addition, the RIVM acts as the Environmental Planning Agency.
