1.4 Nature management policies
To maintain prominent natural areas in the Netherlands, the concept of a National Ecological Network has been developed. This is a coherent network of existing and planned significant natural areas made up of key areas (existing areas), nature development areas (so-called redevelopment) and connecting zones like ecological corridors. In this way, nature can be protected at a national level despite the competition for land resources and the process of urbanisation. A major responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) with the support of other ministries such as VROM, V&W and EZ is the implementation of Dutch government policies on nature management. For related international agricultural issues a department of International Affairs, within the LNV, deals with international contacts with the EU, Central and Eastern Europe, UN bodies like the FAO and developing countries.
